Gameday Preview: Greyhounds host Knights

Sunday, January 13, 2013   by: Brad Coccimiglio

The Soo Greyhounds wrap up a three-game homestand on Sunday night with what will likely be the toughest test they have faced.

The Greyhounds host the London Knights in a 7:07 p.m. start at the Essar Centre on Sunday night, facing a Knights team that is among the nation’s best at the major junior level.

The Knights enter action on Sunday night coming off a 5-3 loss in Saginaw one night earlier. The loss was the first in regulation for the Knights since dropping a 6-3 decision to the Windsor Spitfires on Nov. 1, a span of 28 games. During that span, the Knights posted a 27-0-1-0 record that included 24-straight wins and the lone blemish was an overtime loss to Sarnia on Jan. 1.

The Knights roster features some new faces since the last time the two teams met, Nov. 11 in London. Prior to the trade deadline, the Knights added defenceman Justin Sefton from the Sudbury Wolves in a trade and released overage goaltender Kevin Baillie, who had posted an 18-4-0-1 record prior to the decision.

To replace Baillie, the Knights signed Anthony Stolarz, a Philadelphia Flyers prospect who began the season with the University of Nebraska (Omaha) of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association. A freshman at Nebraska, Stolarz appeared in eight games before making the jump.

The Knights also added another piece from the NCAA ranks as they added defenceman Dakota Mermis from Denver. Mermis has a goal and four points in four games with the Knights.

Meanwhile, the Greyhounds enter Sunday’s game riding a seven-game winning streak on home ice after a 3-1 win over Mississauga on Saturday night.

The last time the two teams met, Max Domi led the way for the Knights with a pair of goals and an assist in a 5-3 Knights win.

Also on the schedule in the Ontario Hockey League on Sunday are four afternoon games, including:

  • Brampton vs. Sudbury
  • Guelph vs. Kingston
  • Kitchener vs. Niagara
  • Oshawa vs. Windsor

7 in a row at home vs #2 in the country. Add some bad blood and this has the makings of a great hockey game.
