Gameday Preview: Steelheads make lone appearance at Essar Centre

Saturday, January 12, 2013   by: Brad Coccimiglio

The Ontario Hockey League trade deadline has passed and the Soo Greyhounds will move forward beginning Saturday night at the Essar Centre.

That’s when the Greyhounds play their first post-deadline game as they host the Mississauga Steelheads in a 7:07 p.m. start.

The game marks the first meeting of the season between the two clubs, both of whom were quiet at the deadline but stand in similar positions in the standings. The Greyhounds enter the game with a 21-18-2-1 record and currently sit seventh in the OHL’s Western Conference while the Steelheads are 20-16-0-4 and are seventh in the Eastern Conference.

The Greyhounds enter Saturday night with seven wins in their last 10 games and are coming off a win over the Sarnia Sting on Wednesday night at home.

The Steelheads, on the other hand, have struggled a bit of late. The team has just three wins in their last 10 games and enter Saturday night having lost three-straight.

The Steelheads will be playing their third game in three nights against the Greyhounds after opening their road trip with a shootout loss to Barrie on Thursday night. On Friday night, the Steelheads dropped a 2-0 decision in Sudbury.

As the Greyhounds continue to find themselves in a battle with the other four teams in the West Division in the conference standings, things don’t get much easier as all five West Division teams are in action on Sunday, including Plymouth hosting Erie and Saginaw hosting London.

Plymouth is currently three points ahead of the Greyhounds while Saginaw sits two points behind the locals.

The OHL schedule sees seven other games on Saturday as well:

  • Belleville vs. Windsor
  • Peterborough vs. Sudbury
  • Plymouth vs. Erie
  • Sarnia vs. Ottawa
  • Saginaw vs. London
  • Barrie vs. Niagara
  • Owen Sound vs. Kingston

The Greyhounds will wrap up their three-game homestand on Sunday night when they host the London Knights.
