The Ontario Hockey League announced today that Soo Greyhounds defenceman Ryan Sproul had been named the league’s defenceman of the month for December.

Sproul scored six goals and 12 points in nine games in December. His six goals led all defencemen. The Detroit Red Wings prospect recorded points in all but one game in December and had a pair of three-point games.

His three-point performances included three assists in a 6-4 win against Saginaw and his first career hat-trick on New Year’s Eve, also against Saginaw.

Other top performers named by the OHL for December included Alex Galchenyuk of Sarnia (Player of the Month), Blake Clarke of the Brampton Battalion (Rookie of the Month) and Mathias Niederberger of the Barrie Colts (Goaltender of the Month).
