Gameday Preview: Greyhounds open up three straight at home

Wednesday, November 28, 2012   by: Brad Coccimiglio

Just five days after meeting in Sudbury, the Soo Greyhounds will renew acquaintances with the Sudbury Wolves on Wednesday night, this time at the Essar Centre.

The Greyhounds skated out of Sudbury Arena on Friday night with as 5-4 win over the Wolves after a 51-save performance from Matt Murray and two goals from rookie forward Jared McCann.

The Wolves have struggled in the month of November having won just three of 11 games heading into action tonight. The Wolves entered November hovering around the .500 mark at 7-8-0-1 but now sit four games below at 10-14-0-3.

Despite their struggles, the Wolves face the Greyhounds coming off a 2-0 shutout of the Brampton Battalion in Brampton on Sunday. Joel Vienneau stopped 34 shots in the win.

After a six-game losing skid to start the month, the Greyhounds have a pair of wins – over Sarnia and Sudbury – and an overtime loss – against Saginaw – in their last four games.

After missing 16 games due to injury, defenceman Ryan Sproul has returned to the Greyhounds lineup and has three goals and an assist in three games and now has four goals and 13 points in 10 games. Sproul had the game-winner in Friday’s win in Sudbury.

The Greyhounds enter tonight with an 11-13-2-0 record, which currently leaves them in ninth spot in the Ontario Hockey League’s Western Conference, one point behind the Saginaw Spirit and Windsor Spitfires and four points behind the Sarnia Sting.

At 10-14-0-3, the Wolves sit in eighth in the Eastern Conference, seven points ahead of the Ottawa 67’s and five points behind the Kingston Frotnenacs.

The Greyhounds/Wolves matchup is one of three on the OHL schedule on Wednesday night as the Plymouth Whalers are in Erie to take on the Otters while the Belleville Bulls host the Niagara IceDogs.

Wednesday also opens a three-game homestand for the Greyhounds as they also host the Erie Otters on Friday night and the Owen Sound Attack on Saturday.
