Algoma U Thunderbird Basketball Teams Split Against Mohawk

The Algoma University Thunderbird basketball teams split a pair of games against the Mohawk Mountaineers this past Saturday at the George Leach Centre.

The women’s team extended their regular season unbeaten streak to four games, defeating Mohawk by a score of 68-56. Current OCAA Athlete of the Week, Corina Bruni tossed in 23 points for the Thunderbirds while rookie guard Anna Stilin added 10. Lacey Wolters was the leading scorer for the Mountaineers with 18 points.

In a battle of the top two men’s teams in the Canadian College Athletic Association rankings, the Thunderbirds lost a 60-57 nail-biter against the Mountaineers. Reynaldo Carnakie led the Thunderbirds with 16 points while Jovain Wilson and Odane Ferguson added 12 and 10 points respectively. Taylor Dowhaniuk led Mohawk with 20 points and 10 rebounds. The Thunderbirds are currently 4-1 in regular season play.

Both team’s travel to Toronto this coming weekend to take on the Humber Hawks and Sheridan Bruins.
