North Stars score 27 goals in sweep of Cubs

Sunday, October 28, 2012   by: Brad Coccimiglio

The results are great, but that doesn’t make the games any easier for the Soo North Stars.

The North Stars picked up a pair of Great North Midget League wins over the weekend, sweeping a pair of games against the New Liskeard Cubs by scores of 15-2 on Saturday and 12-2 on Sunday.

“That’s not the type of competition we need to play,” said North Stars coach Mike Hall. “Until the teams in the north realize that they need to amalgamate Kirkland Lake and New Liskeard together to give themselves an opportunity, there’s just too much of a gap. They need to have some serious talks in the north about amalgamating a team. There’s no other way around it.”

Hall noted that amalgamation is something that has been discussed, but nothing has been put in place as of yet to help the situation.

“There’s been discussion around the table about amalgamation and you face grief from the teams in the north but it’s quite obvious,” said Hall. “It’s not like this doesn’t happen every year. It’s the same couple of teams that are down near the bottom. They have to have some serious discussion about trying to fix the problem.”

On Saturday night, Anthony Stefano scored a pair of goals and set up five others to lead the North Stars offensive attack. Nathan Hebert (three goals, two assists), Jaron Rowe (three goals, two assists) and Matt Pinder (two goals, three assists) also had big nights in the win. Matt Mitchell had four assists while Ryan Vendramin (two goals, three assists), Cody Caron (one goal, two assists), Jaren Bellini (one goal, two assists), Kaelan O’Flynn (three assists) and Devin Shell (three assists) all had three-point nights for the North Stars. Ryan Cooke had the other goal in Saturday’s win.

Erik Laplante and Felix Lantaigne scored for New Liskeard on Saturday night.

On Sunday, Vendramin led the way with three goals and two assists in the win. Pinder also scored three goals and set up another for the North Stars while Stefano added a pair of goals and two assists. Rowe, Mitchell, Shell and Cameron White also scored on Sunday. Rowe added two assists while Bellini had three assists for the North Stars.

Gabriel Rheault and Mike Herd scored for New Liskeard in Sunday’s loss.

The North Stars enjoy a weekend off before returning to action Nov. 9 when they open the Blueline Tournament in Kitchener.

Wow, this doesn't make sense. It's a wasted trip when our midget team travels to these towns, also when they visit here. Those scores should never be. The poor kids on the opposing teams are likely pretty frustrated. doesn't make sense!
