High school recap

It was a busy week in both high school football and girls high school basketball locally this week as both wind down towards playoff time.

In senior football, Thursday night saw St. Basil pick up a 33-0 win over Superior Heights in a game that clinches first place for the Saints. David Toppan had a pair of touchdowns for St. Basil in the win, running in from a yard out and catching a 33-yard pass from quarterback JP Stefanizzi. Stefanizzi also hit Aiden MacLeod for a 10-yard touchdown. Blake Ianelli had the other major for the Saints in the win as he returned a blocked punt 20-yards for a touchdown.

Carlo Carchidi kicked four converts in the win along with a 25-yard field goal and a pair of single points to round out the scoring.

Jacob Creedon had five tackles defensively for St. Basil.

Stevan Hiiemaa had 38 yards rushing on 11 carries for Superior Heights while Sean McGonigal caught three passes for 22 yards.

On Friday night in the other senior game, St. Mary’s beat Korah 38-0. Justin Elwgren hit Ray Duplin for three touchdowns – from 32 yards, 19 yards and 13 yards – to pace St. Mary’s offensively. Dylan Hebert had a nine yard touchdown run while Jason Thibodeau ran the ball in from 10 yards out. Brandon Vernelli kicked a 22-yard field goal to round out the scoring.

For Korah, Peter Greve ran for 73 yards on 10 carries.

In junior football action, Superior Heights beat St. Basil 35-0 while St. Mary’s beat Korah 14-6.

Action continues this week as St. Basil takes on White Pines on Tuesday night while St. Mary’s and Superior Heights meet on Wednesday. The winner of Wednesday’s game will finish in third.

The senior football standings are:

  1. St. Basil (5-0)
  2. St. Mary’s (3-2)
  3. Superior Heights (3-2)
  4. Korah (2-4)
  5. White Pines (0-5)

The playoffs open on Oct. 19 when Korah and White Pines face off to determine who will face St. Basil on Oct. 25.

In girls basketball, action opened on Tuesday as St. Basil and St. Mary’s picked up wins in the senior division. St. Basil beat White Pines 35-30 thanks to a 14-point performance from Alyssa Dovigi. Kiersten Olar had 14 points as well for White Pines.

St. Mary’s beat Superior Heights 59-47 in the other senior game. Hannah Murray led all scorers with 30 points for St. Mary’s Taylor Cond had 11 points for Superior Heights.

On Thursday night St. Mary’s picked up another senior win with a 47-39 decision over St. Basil thanks to a 22-point performance from Murray. Brooke Bellerose added 14 points in the win. Dovigi, Kristi McPhail and Anastasia Greve had nine points each for St. Basil.

Thursday’s other senior game saw Adriene Bruni score 22 points to lead White Pines to a 46-32 win over Korah. Riley Hogan had 16 points for Korah.

In junior action on Tuesday Chase Sewell had nine points to lead White Pines to a 31-30 win over St. Basil while Kassy Jones scored 13 points as Superior Heights beat St. Mary’s 22-21

On Thursday night, Julia Pulente scored seven points as St. Mary’s beat St. Basil 26-16. In the other game, Carina Hargis scored 15 points as Korah beat White Pines 51-26.

The senior standings heading into this week are:

  1. St. Mary’s (5-0)
  2. St. Basil (4-2)
  3. White Pines (3-2)
  4. Korah (1-4)
  5. Superior Heights (0-5)

The junior standings are:

  1. Superior Heights (4-1)
  2. St. Mary’s (4-1)
  3. Korah (3-2)
  4. White Pines (1-4)
  5. St. Basil (0-5)

Action in both divisions resumes on Monday night when St. Mary’s takes on White Pines. Also on tap this week are Korah versus St. Basil and White Pines versus Superior Heights on Tuesday. On Thursday night St. Basil faces Superior Heights while Korah takes on St. Mary’s.
