SUDBURY, ONT. – The Soo Thunderbirds ended the unbeaten streak of the Sudbury Nickel Barons on Wednesday night in Sudbury.

The Thunderbirds beat the Barons 4-1, handing Sudbury their first loss of the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League season. The Barons had entered the game with a perfect 8-0 record.

Darcy Casola led the way for the Thunderbirds with a pair of goals while Philippe Cliche had a goal and an assist in the win. Veteran forward Joey Couture also scored in the win while goaltender Steven Dombroski stopped 30 shots.

Andre Comtois scored the lone goal for Sudbury while goaltender Alexander Laino stopped 34 shots.

With the win, the Thunderbirds improve to 5-1-1-1 and move into a tie for second with the North Bay Trappers. The Trappers have played one less game than the Thunderbirds and are currently the lone NOJHL entry to have not lost a game in regulation time. The Trappers are currently 5-0-1-1.

Next up for the Thunderbirds will be a road game against the Elliot Lake Bobcats on Saturday night before returning home the following day to face the Abitibi Eskimos at the Essar Centre. Puck drop is set for 3 p.m.
