Cougar Classic champions crowned

The 2nd Annual Cougar Classic Girls High School Basketball Tournament was hosted over the past weekend by Sault College Athletics.  This year’s tournament featured 22 teams competing in both the senior and junior divisions from across Northern Ontario.

On the junior side, the championship game pitted the Lo-Ellen Park Knights against the E.S.C. Theriault Flammes in a Sudbury/Timmins final.  The Knights came out of the gate hot, and by half-time found themselves leading the Flammes by a score of 28-8. The Flammes put up a valiant effort to come within ten of their opponents in the third quarter, but the Knights were relentless in their quest for victory, and in the end went on to win their battle 55-35.

• Melissa Lacasse – E.S.C. Theriault
• Carina Hargis – Korah
• Nicole Conlin  – Lo-Ellen
• Kassy Jones – Superior Heights

MVP

• Sheila Fyfe – Lo-Ellen

In the senior division, Sudbury’s Lasalle Lancers (pictured) took on the hometown White Pines Wolverines. In a fast-paced opening half the teams went head-to-head. Aggressive play and strong defence resulted in a one point lead, 19-18, for the Wolverines heading into the second half. The game continued to remain close with neither team ever gaining more than a four-point lead on their opponents. A scoring drought in the fourth quarter for the Wolverines allowed the Lancers to gain momentum and ultimately spurring them onward to capture the victory with a final score of 40-27. Karli Marcotte helped launch the Lancers to their 13-point win by scoring 10 of her 21 total points in the fourth quarter. The Wolverines put up a strong team effort with all five starters contributing to the score board.
