High school football roundup: SMC and Superior Heights pick up wins

St. Mary’s and Superior Heights picked up wins in senior high school football this weekend to improve to 2-1 as the season moves into week four.
Superior Heights beat White Pines 50-0 on Friday night while St. Mary’s picked up a 34-17 win over Korah on Saturday afternoon.
On Friday, Stevan Hiiemaa scored a pair of touchdowns to, both on 13-yard runs, for Superior Heights in the win. Quarterback Nathan Elgie hit Sean McGonical from 12 yards out while also scoring himself on a six-yard run. Caleb Williams scored from two yards out while Jeff Auger ran the ball in from 26 yards out. Kyle Ramsay completed the Superior Heights scoring when he returned an interception 26 yards for a touchdown.
Defensively for White Pines, Cory Labreque had four tackles in the loss.
Friday’s junior game saw Superior Heights beat White Pines 35-6.
On Saturday, Dylan Hebert scored a pair of touchdowns to help St. Mary’s to the victory. Hebert ran the ball in from four yards out and also caught a 40-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Justin Elwgren in the win. Hebert finished the day with 114 yards receiving on three catches while also running for 90 yards on 22 carries.
Elwgren finished the afternoon with eight completions for 241 yards and three touchdowns. Ray Duplin and Malcolm Carlson-Strain also caught touchdown passes in the win.
For Korah, Peter Greve ran for 61 yards on 14 carries while completing seven passed for 201 yards, which included two passes of 68 yard each to Craig Bovingdon, which resulted in a Korah touchdown, and Jordan Bringleson. Matt DiBerardino caught a touchdown pass as well in the loss.
Saturday’s junior game saw Korah beat St. Mary’s 26-21.
As week four gets set to kick off on Tuesday night the standings see St. Basil as the lone undefeated team in the five-team loop:
- St. Basil (3-0)
- St. Mary’s (2-1)
- Superior Heights (2-1)
- Korah (1-3)
- White Pines (0-3)
Action resumes on Tuesday evening as Superior Heights takes on White Pines in a game that was rescheduled from what was supposed to be opening night on Sept. 12. On Thursday night St. Basil takes on St. Mary’s while Korah and White Pines clash on Friday night. Start time for all three games is 7 p.m. and scheduled for Rocky DiPietro Field.
