St. Basil remains unbeaten in senior football

St. Basil improved to 3-0 in senior high school football after a convincing 44-7 win over Korah on Wednesday night at Rocky DiPietro Field.

The Saints jumped out to a 17-0 lead through one quarter after a pair of touchdowns by David Toppan and a Carlo Carchidi field goal and led 24-7 by halftime.

Toppan finished the night with 80 yards receiving on just two catches with three touchdowns, including a 24-yard touchdown reception in the third quarter to go along with his two first-quarter majors.

Toppan was in on a fourth touchdown for the Saints as well at the end of the third quarter. After fielding a Korah punt, Toppan ran the ball 70 yards before giving the ball to Nick Guzzo for the final 20 yards for the final St. Basil touchdown of the night.

Mitch Mazzuca ran the ball for a pair of touchdowns for St. Basil in the win, both from 55 yards out. Mazzuca finished the night 150 yards rushing on 10 carries in the win while quarterback JP Stefanizzi completed six of 15 passes for 148 yards.

Defensively, CJ Chiarello, Jacob Creedon, Aaron Bourdages and Blake Ianelli had four tackles each for St. Basil.

Colts quarterback Peter Greve ran for 109 yards on 13 carries, including a 13-yard touchdown run in the second quarter. Greve passed for 141 yards on 16 of 31 completions in the loss. Jake Bringleson caught nine passes for Korah for 77 yards while Will Stewart had four tackles defensively.

Action in the senior division continues this week as Superior Heights (1-1) takes on White Pines (0-2) on Friday night in a 7 p.m. start while Korah (1-2) is back in action on Saturday afternoon against St. Mary’s (1-1) at 1 p.m. Both games are at Rocky DiPietro Field.
