It was a busy weekend for many of the local AAA hockey teams as the Vanmark Soo Greyhounds minor peewee team competed in London while the Soo Greyhounds minor bantam team competed in Mackinaw City.
The minor peewee team competed in the London Jr. Knights Early Bird AAA tournament, coming home with a 2-1-1 record. The Greyhounds opened the tournament with wins over the Oshawa Jr. Generals (4-2) and the Ajax-Pickering Raiders (5-2). After a 7-2 loss to the London Jr. Knights, the Greyhounds skated to a 2-2 tie with Elgin-Middlesex.
The minor bantam Greyhounds faced the Mackinaw City Northern Avalanche and came away with a win and a tie. Nolan Makkonen, Lucas Stefano and Mark Tassone scored in game one as the Greyhounds picked up a 3-1 win. Tassone also had an assist in the win while goaltender Matt Reid stopped 22 shots.
In game two, Stefano had a goal and an assist while Tassone also scored as the teams skated to a 2-2 tie. Goaltender Garrett Boyonoski stopped 25 shots.
The peewee team is now off until a pair of road games against the North Bay Trappers in North Bay on Oct. 5th and Oct. 6th in league play. The minor bantam team travels to Sudbury this weekend to take on the Nickel City Sons, also in league play.
