KIRKLAND LAKE, ONT. – The Soo Thunderbirds improved their record to 3-0-1 on Friday night with a 1-0 win over the Kirkland Lake Gold Miners in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League action.

Darcy Casola’s goal at 12:07 of the first period was all the Thunderbirds needed in the victory as goaltender Joel Horodziejczyk stopped all 26 shots he faced in the win.

Kirkland Lake goaltender Bryden Daoust stopped 25 shots in the loss.

The Gold Miners drop to 2-3-0 with the loss.

The game was the first of three on the road this weekend. The Thunderbirds take on the Abitibi Eskimos on Saturday evening in Iroquois Falls before taking on the North Bay Trappers on Sunday afternoon.

In other NOJHL action on Friday night, Coty Thomas scored a pair of goals to lead the Elliot Lake Bobcats to their first NOJHL win as they beat the Blind River Beavers 6-2 in Elliot Lake.
