Calibani leads Civics to Championship in Traverse City

Emily Calibani's two first half goals in Sunday's championship game were enough to lead the Sault U14 Civics Surge girls to a 2-1 victory over Traverse City's Northern Storm 98's at the Autumn Classic soccer tournament.

“Two incredible goals from Emily and solid play from our players all over the field. Really nice to watch” commented Surge coach Jeff Conley.  “A great way to end our season.”

The Surge earned a berth in the championship game with a 2-1-0 (win-tie-loss) record in round-robin play in the 10-team division.

On Saturday morning, the Surge battled to a 0-0 draw with SCOR 98 Black out of Rockford, Michigan.

In the afternoon, three goals from Calibani and singles from Meagan DeMeo and Ryea Caughill fueled a 5-1 victory over Troy Michigan Force 98's.  In a ‘must win’ affair Sunday morning, Calibani and Angela Caicco led a 2-0 victory over Grand Rapids Crew.

Megan Girardi was spectacular in goal the entire weekend.

“We battled all weekend and made big plays when we had to,” added Conley. “It was a total team effort and we walked away with a nice trophy.  I couldn't be happier for our girls.”

The Sault Civics Surge are Kiana Cicchello, Emily Calibani, Mikayla Conley, Samantha Battagin, Ciara Spina, Jillian Philip, Bailie Malmloff, Kristen Palumbo, Megan Girardi, Megan Sizer, Maggie Kirk, Mariah Fata, Danielle Watling, Caitlin Novello, Ryea Caughill, Nicole Misasi, Meagan DeMeo and Angela Caicco.
