Saints win nailbiter in high school football

An opening quarter rouge wound up being the difference in Sault Ste. Marie high school football on Friday night.
The St. Basil Saints picked up a first-quarter rouge in a 28-27 win over the St. Mary’s Knights at Rocky DiPietro field. The Saints, after falling behind 6-1 early in the second quarter, built up a 22-6 lead by the half, only to see St. Mary’s battle back in the late stages of the game. The Knights outscored St. Basil 21-6 in the second half.
St. Basil quarterback JP Stefanizzi threw for 236 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Saints offensive attack. Stefanizzi completed 10 of 21 passes and a pair of interceptions in the win.
David Toppan caught a pair of touchdown passes, of 16 and 35 yards.Toppan caught three passes in the game for 65 yards while Andrew Paluzzi led all Saints receivers with five catches for 138 yards.
Mitchell Mazzuca ran for 84 yards on 19 carries for St. Basil in the win. Defensively, Aaron Bourdages had nine tackles.
Dylan Hebert led the St. Mary’s attack offensively with 121 yard rushing on 25 carries and a touchdown. All of the Knights offensive yardage came by way of the run (229 yards) in the loss.
