The Soo Greyhounds have officially received word that Russian-born forward Sergei Tolchinsky will be joining the team as early as Monday.
After some initial concerns that the small-but-skilled forward would not come to Sault Ste. Marie and had hoped to play in a city closer to his agent, Detroit-based Igor Larionov.
Now represented by New Jersey-based Mark Gandler, Tolchinsky will be making the trek to Sault Ste. Marie this weekend to join his new team.
Visa paperwork set Tolchinsky’s arrival date back but both the Greyhounds and Tolchinsky have confirmed the paperwork is completed.
The Greyhounds selected Tolchinsky 12th overall in the 2012 Canadian Hockey League import draft.
In other team news on Friday, the Greyhounds announced the acquisition of forward Jacob Smith from the Kingston Frontenacs. The Greyhounds sent a 14th round draft pick (2013) to Kingston to complete the transaction.
Smith is entering his second season in the OHL. The 17-year-old centre scored a goal and seven points in 58 games for the Frontenacs last season.
A native of Sudbury, Smith spent the 2010-11 season with the Sudbury Wolves minor midget team where he scored 38 goals and 70 points in 61 games.
