Thunderbirds begin NOJHL season tonight

SAULT STE. MARIE - The Soo Thunderbirds begin the 2012-13 season tonight at the Essar Centre.

The reigning Northern Ontario Jr. Hockey League and provincial Dudley-Hewitt Cup champions take on their district rival, the Blind River Beavers, at 7:30 p.m.

Last season, the Thunderbirds won their way to the national championship RBC Cup, where they lost in the semi-finals.

It was the best finish in the history of the club.

And this year, general manager Kevin Cain looks forward to defending his league and regional titles.

“With some lineup changes here and there, we definitely have a chance to compete and return to the Dudley Hewitt Cup,” he said. “We’re going to have to fight for it, and battle some stiff competition, but we have potential to be really good again this year.”

In tonight’s season opener, Sault Ste. Marie Mayor Debbie Amaroso will be dropping the puck during the ceremonial face-off.

The team will present her with the Dudley-Hewitt Cup.

More information on the Thunderbirds, including their 2012-13 schedule, is available online at www.tbirdhockey.ca.
