As the Soo Greyhounds took to the ice for the second day of training camp on Thursday, veteran players and rookies alike found themselves battling for roster spots.
As the 47 players in camp played in their first scrimmages on Thursday, some of the teams veteran players looked to make an early impression on the Greyhounds management and coaching staff.
Veteran forward David Broll, who struggled offensively at times during the 2011-12 Ontario Hockey League season, had a pair of goals on Thursday, including the overtime winner for Team Carter in the second scrimmage of the day. Broll also had two assists on the day.
For Team Thornton, the line of veterans Michael Schumacher and Brandon Alderson along with rookie forward Jared McCann combined for nine points. Schumacher had a pair of goals while Alderson chipped in with a pair of assists in the second scrimmage, a 6-5 victory by Team Carter.
Sophomore forward Alex Morgan scored twice in Team Thornton’s 5-2 win in the opening scrimmage.
Action in the Greyhounds training camp continue on Friday morning with a final scrimmage at 9 a.m. Following the scrimmage, team management and coaching staff will meet and restructure the teams for Saturday night’s Luke Williams Memorial Red/White Game.
