Civics Shock U12 Girls Advance to Semi-Finals in Newmarket Soccer Tournament

(SAULT STE. MARIE, ON – Aug. 14, 2012): Sault Civics Shock U12 Girls Red faced strong competition in the 2012 Heart of York Tournament in Newmarket, Ontario this past weekend.  The Sault Shock finished the round robin portion of the tournament with two wins and one loss to secure a spot in the semi-finals only to suffer a tough loss against eventual tournament champions, Newmarket United A.

In a day filled with rain and less than desirable field conditions, the Shock won their first game 3-0 against the Nepean Storm. Nicole Pulente scored the first two goals with Makenzi Chartrand adding a third. Emma Hendrie achieved the shutout with strong goalkeeping.

The team faced tougher competition in the second game against the Darlington Dynamos. Although the Shock played a solid game, a late goal by the Dynamos led to a 1-0 loss.

The third round robin game resulted in a hard fought 2-1 win by the Shock over the Newmarket United B team with Emily Scarpino and Makenzi Chartrand each scoring.

The Shock advanced to the semi-finals on Sunday but were overcome by the hometown team and eventual winners of the tournament.

“The team played well in Newmarket despite the wet conditions. The defence held up in the close games,” said Coach Alison Bodnar. “Hopefully we can build on this tournament and finish off the season in a winning fashion in Midland later this month.”

Other team players include Tiffany Davies, Jadyn Deschene, Sabrina Duckstein, Taryn Gazankas, Kara Gruyters, Jessica Howe, Julia Howe, Jenna Nanne, Olivia Orazietti, Destinee Pine, Emily Roberts, Laura Rosso, and Emily Weir. Coaching staff for the team is comprised of Coach Alison Bodnar, Assistant Coach Jessica Gillespie, Team Trainer Ryan Mitchell and Team Manager Allyson Pulente.

The next tournament comes in two weeks with the team heading to Michigan for the Midland Fusion Invitational Tournament on the August 25-26 weekend.
