U13 Green Circle Boys Civics Win Silver in Petoskey
The U-13 Boys Civics team performed very well in their first tournament of the year this past weekend in Petoskey.
The boys went undefeated during preliminary play with four wins which enabled them to capture first in their pool and, as a result, advanced to the finals. Unfortunately, they ran into a strong team from London, Ontario and had to settle for the silver medal.
In summary, the Civics defeated the Fruitport Fire in their opening game 11-0. Kristian Shuttleworth notched five goals with David Gioia, Daniel VanBoerdonk and Daniel Martella each adding two apiece.
The second game resulted in a 6-0 win over Cadillac Energy. Lucas Stefano led the way with three goals, Paul Zappacosta added two with Kristian Shuttleworth getting the other.
The thirrd game resulted in a 7-2 victory over South West Michigan. Nick Smith had three goals, with David Gioia and Lucas Stefano adding two each.
The Civics beat the host team, Petoskey Lightning, in their fourth and final preliminary game 4-0. Andrew Berg, Daniel Martella, Lucas Stefano and David Gioia all added singles. The four wins allowed the team to advance to the finals to play the Norwest Arsenal which resulted in a 4-0 loss. Strong goaltending throughout the tournament was provided by Aaron Grawbarger, with three shutouts and a very solid performance in the final game.
Next action for the U-13 boys will be on July 28 when they travel to play in the Greater Sudbury Impact Tournament.
