U14 Civics Split Weekend Series in Waterloo

The U14 Civics Surge Girls soccer team returned from Waterloo on Sunday with a split of their weekend series with Waterloo United in Western Ontario Youth Soccer League play.

On Saturday, the Civics were defeated 6-2 by WOYSL's top-ranked team, despite an outstanding effort by goalkeeper Megan Girardi. Emily Calibani and Danielle Watling scored the Civics goals in the loss.

On Sunday, in 32-degree heat, the Civics regrouped and turned the tables on the Waterloo squad with a dominating 5-1 victory. Maggie Kirk kicked off the scoring for the Sault, followed by three goals from Calibani and a single marker from Ryea Caughill.

Civics Coach Jeff Conley was generous with his praise following Sunday's win. “We (coaching staff) went with a different formation on Sunday and the girls executed beautifully. It sounds cliché, but it was a real team effort. The girls managed their energy well in the heat, moved the ball well, and defended as well as we have all season.”

Conley credited Saturday's loss as the key motivator.

“We learned a lot about ourselves after Saturday's loss and responded loudly. You can't take a day off in this league.  All in all, it's a good start to our season."

The U14 Civics Surge are back in action Saturday, June 16th at 5:00 PM at Tom Tipton Park and Sunday June 17th at11:00 AM at Strathclair Fields.

The Tenaris/SIS U16 Civic Vipers split their weekend games in WOYSL League play.

The Vipers lost their first game of the season to London Byron Athletica 1-0 on Saturday in a hard fought game. The Vipers travelled to Windsor after the game to play Eastside Kickers on Sunday.

After numerous chances in the first half, Tiana Palumbo found the back of the net in the second half to give the Vipers a 1-0 victory. Jaime Ricard recorded her second shutout of the season. The win gives the Vipers a 2-1-1 win-draw-loss record, good for third place.

Next action for the Vipers is next weekend June 16 and 17 against the North London Galaxy. Game one is at 7:00 pm at Tom Tipton Park and game two is Sunday at 11:00 am at Strathclair Park.
