High school basketball aplenty this weekend

The weekend will mark a busy time for high school basketball locally with a pair of tournaments scheduled to tip off on Friday.

The ‘AA” Northern Ontario Secondary School Athletics girls championships open Friday at both the junior and senior levels with a pair of local schools competing.

The city champions from Korah open the tournament on home court Friday. The junior team faces St. Joseph Scollard Hall of North Bay at 11:30 a.m. while the senior team also faces the North Bay representative at 1:45 p.m.

At Superior Heights, the Steelhawks juniors will open the tournament against Lockerby (Sudbury) in an 11:30 start while the senior Steelhawks face Lasalle, also of Sudbury, in a 1:45 tip off.

Action continues Friday afternoon with junior games at 3:30 p.m. and senior games at 5:30 p.m. at both schools. Teams competing will depend on the results from the early games.

The NOSSA junior final is set for 11 a.m. on Saturday at Korah while the senior final is at 1 p.m., also at Korah.

The 2015 Eric Nystedt Memorial Invitational Tournament is also set to open on Friday with games at the junior and senior levels.

The senior division opens at Sault College when St. Mary’s and Central Algoma meet at 2:30 p.m.

Other senior games in the tournament on Friday include Korah vs. W.C. Eaket (Blind River) at White Pines at 5 p.m. The two late games see St. Ignatius (Thunder Bay) face White Pines at Sault College while Superior Heights faces Confederation (Sudbury) at Superior Heights. Both games begin at 8 p.m.

The junior side of the tournament begins at 1 p.m. Friday at Sault College when Superior Heights takes on Central Algoma. The rest of Friday’s junior games are scheduled for White Pines.

The tournament championship games are Saturday night at Sault College. The junior final is at 6 p.m. and the senior final begins at 8 p.m.

HIGH SCHOOL HOCKEY

In high school hockey action on Thursday afternoon, Superior Heights skated to a 7-2 win over Korah in the second annual charity classic game between the two schools.

Noah Naccarato, Mitchell McMinn and Stano Sdao had a goal and an assist each for Superior Heights while Michael Byron assisted on a pair of goals. Tyler Albert, Nick Gyde, Zach Particelli and Jaydon Reid also scored.

Nick Keenan and Isaac Belsito scored for Korah.
