Hockey Notebook: GNML Thunderbirds take two of three

Call it a successful weekend for the Great North Midget League’s Soo Thunderbirds. The team traveled to North Bay for three regular season games against the North Bay Trappers.

The team traveled to North Bay for three regular season games against the North Bay Trappers.

On Friday night, Keegan Stevenson scored the overtime winner as the Thunderbirds opened the weekend with a 2-1 victory. Lucas Theriault added a goal and an assist for the Thunderbirds.

Robert Ranger scored the lone goal for the Trappers.

On Saturday, Nick Smith and Noah Boman scored twice each to lead the Thunderbirds to a 6-3 win.

Stevenson and Theriault also scored for the Thunderbirds while Braeden Villeneuve, Conor Eastaugh and Lucas Nevrencan completed the North Bay scoring.

The Trappers salvaged the weekend set with a 5-3 win in Sunday’s finale. Ranger’s goal just over five minutes into the third period was the game-winner while Villeneuve, Jacob Delisle, Finn Seguin and Blake Whitehead also scored.

Theriault, Stevenson and Nik Gervasi scored for the Thunderbirds.

The Thunderbirds return to GNML action by hosting the Timmins Majors on Nov. 21. Puck drop is scheduled for noon at the Rankin Arena.

LAKERS SWEPT AT HOME

It was a tough weekend for the Lake Superior State University Lakers hockey team.

After a pair of ties at nationally-ranked Bowling Green a week earlier, Lake State was swept by Arizona State, competing in its first season at the Division-1 level of NCAA hockey, over the weekend.

On Friday night, Joe Lappin’s second goal of the night in the opening minute of the third period was the game-winner as Arizona State beat LSSU 3-2. Ryan Stevens also scored.

Former Soo Thunderbirds defenceman Owen Headrick had a goal for the Lakers while James Roll also scored.

On Saturday night Jordan Masters scored at 4:28 of overtime to complete the sweep for Arizona State.

Stevens and Charlie Zuccarini also scored for Arizona State while goaltender Ryland Pashovitz stopped 34 shots.

Nick Kossoff stopped 28 shots in Saturday’s game for Lake State while Diego Cuglietta and Gus Correale completed the Lakers scoring.

The Lakers are back in action beginning Nov. 20 at Bemidji State in the first of a two-game weekend series.

Next home action for the Lakers will be a home series against Ferris State beginning on Nov. 27.
