It was a disappointing end to the third Grand Slam of Curling event of the season for Sault Ste. Marie’s Brad Jacobs.

A deuce in the eighth end lifted Reid Carruthers of Winnipeg, MB to a 7-5 win over Team Jacobs – which includes third Ryan Fry, second E.J. Harnden and lead Ryan Harnden – to move on to the semi-finals of the National, which is the third event in the Grand Slam of Curling season.

Carruthers opened the game by stealing one in the opening end.

He would then break a 2-2 tie with three in the fifth end only to see Jacobs battle back to tie with a pair in the sixth and a steal of one in the seventh end, paving the way for the Carruthers deuce in the final end.

In other quarter-final action on Saturday, Brad Gushue (St. John’s, NL) beat Thomas Ulsrud (Oslo, Norway) 9-4 in seven ends after breaking things open with four in the final end.

Glenn Howard (Penetanguishene, ON) advanced with a 5-4 win over Kevin Koe (Calgary, AB). Trailing 4-3, Howard scored a pair in the eighth end to win.

In the other quarter-final, a steal of two in the sixth end sealed a 6-3 win for John Epping (Toronto, ON) over Pat Simmons (Calgary, AB).

Howard and Carruthers will meet in one semi-final while Gushue and Epping face off in the other semi-final, set for 7:30 p.m. Saturday night.
