Algoma University, in partnership with Algoma Kinniwabi Travel Association, Tourism Northern Ontario, and Ontario Tourism Marketing Partnership Corporation, are pleased to announce that Ultimate Fighting Champion (UFC) Welterweight Champion and Hall of Famer Matt Hughes will be on campus for a public presentation and demonstration on Monday, November 9 at 4:30 p.m.

As the nine-time World Welterweight Champion, Matt Hughes is one of UFC's most popular figures.

His travels as an ambassador of UFC have made him a household name, and Hughes’ image as a champion, hunter, outdoorsman, and devoted family man have endeared him to millions of fans outside the mixed martial arts world.

Although he is retired from fighting, Hughes continues his affiliation with UFC as Vice-President of Athlete Development and Government Relations.

Hughes will be giving a public talk at Algoma U’s George Leach Centre (GLC) beginning at 4:30 p.m.

He will follow his presentation with a wrestling demonstration with Algoma Thunderbirds wrestlers as well as members of the Steel City MMA Club to show off the talent within the community.

Hughes will close out the Algoma U event with an autograph signing.

“We are extremely excited to host Matt Hughes on campus,” said Athletics and Recreation Director Mark Kontulainen. “It’s great to be able to connect public figures with our local community but also for those public figures to be able to demonstrate the importance of post-secondary education.”

Algoma U will also announce the University's successful bid to host the upcoming Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Championships in February 2016.

The best wrestlers from across Ontario will compete in the George Leach Centre for a chance to qualify for the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) Championships.

Hughes is visiting the Algoma region as part of his Northern Ontario tour in which he is hunting for small game on his highly popular television series Uncaged with Matt Hughes.

Joining Matt on the hunt is the crew from Dirt Trax TV.

This event is open to the public and free of charge. Free parking will be provided to all attendees.
