Beaver Buggies are big in the 75th

This past weekend Beaver, Cubs, Scouts, Ventuer's and Rovers from five sections converged in the Sears court of the Station Mall to determine winners in each of the respective categories.

Nine year old Erin Foster member of the Bar River Cub Pack who are defending a three year dominance in winning the Kub Kar Rally was very guarded on the secrets of where exactly the weight goes into the body of the Kub Kar but did elude to friction on the wheels being another area were some secret polish is used.

HIs Dad Steve Foster who has been a Cub Leader for four years offered some direction and tips with Erin putting in the majority of the hours of hard work.

Erin enjoys participating in Kub Kar rally as well as camping outdoors, "I get to make lots of friends."

Caleb Foster a fifth year member of the program came in second in the Scouts truck race. He enjoys the Scouting because, "it gives you more responsibility for camping by having to prepare a list of all of things you need for your weekend of camping."

Amy (5 yrs) and brother William (7yrs) McLean both Beavers in the John Wesley United Church group spent several hours assembling the pieces, adding the wheels and then applying paint, sparkles and in Amy's case some butterfly stickers to help her buggy go faster.

In the Beaver Buggy category every entry is a winner as they get a badge to sew on their blankets.

Amy enjoys making crafts and having snacks at the weekly one hour Wed night meetings starting at 6:30 p.m.

"Scouting is alive and strong in Sault Ste Marie with 2014 marking the 75th year of the Scouting program in Sault Ste Marie, said Sandra McLean, Area Commissioner.

With five full sections from Echo Bay and the city with a motto of "Building a Better World".

The Scouting programs four levels is open to boys and girls ranging in age from 5 -17. Rovers range from 18 to 27 and act in leadership roles of Scouting sections.

There is a fee to join but no child is turned away with the Canadian Tire Jump Start program and a Scouting initiative called, No One Left Behind.

Adult volunteers are always welcome. while all volunteers go through interviews and a Police Records Check. Ed Martin a 35 year volunteer was the official at the start line of this year's race and better know by his Scouting name Akela.

On the May 16 to 19 weekend the 53rd annual rendezvous will be held at Thyers Acres with a Roman era theme.

Scouting groups from as far away as Sudbury, Boyne Michigan will be part of the expected 300-400 participants.
