Slain hockey mom's family asks for help

SURREY, B.C. - The family of a slain hockey mom from Surrey, B.C., is making an emotional plea for the public to help find the killer, saying whoever is responsible has cut out the family's heart.

Julie Paskall was attacked last Sunday night as she waited for her son outside the Newton Arena, but she never recovered and died in hospital on Tuesday.

Al Paskall, Julie's husband of 34 years, told Global News that he wakes up every morning thinking his 53-year-old wife is still there.

"They have no idea what they've done," he said. "They have no idea who they've taken from us. They have taken this family and cut its heart out. That's what they've done."

He asked anybody who saw or heard anything to contact police.

"Anything that helps put this person behind bars and get him off the streets so he doesn't do this to anybody else, please, please," he said.

Daughter Rhiannon Paskall called her mother her hero. She said her mom taught her to walk and talk. She said she wouldn't be the person she is today without her mom.

Meantime, a trust fund has been opened at Vancity credit union branches to help the family.

Family friend Bill Hoadley said Al Paskall is unable to work, and the money will help the family survive over the coming months.

Hoadley said donations should be marked Paskall Family Trust.

Homicide investigators have operated a command post out of the arena parking lot for the past two days and have been canvassing the community, looking for tips.

Auxiliary RCMP officers are expected to put up posters around the community Saturday.

There have been two dozen homicides in Surrey in 2013, a record high that prompted the mayor to launch a task force last month. (CKNW, Global)
