Telus puts down deposit for spectrum auction
MONTREAL - Big carrier Telus joins small cellphone player Wind Mobile among bidders for wireless spectrum that's being put up for auction in January.
Telus (TSX:T) has confirmed it has put down a refundable deposit to meet today's deadline to bid on radio waves needed to operate cellphone networks.
Wind Mobile has already said it will be among bidders interested in expanding their networks.
Rogers (TSX:RCI.B) and Bell (TSX:BCE) declined to confirm their participation, but are expected to be bidders.
Industry Canada will release on Monday a list of those who applied to participate in the Jan. 14 auction.
Major U.S. carrier AT&T also wouldn't say if it will take part in the auction after Verizon announced it was no longer interested in competing in Canada's wireless market.
Canada's big three carriers have about 25 million customers between them and dominate the market.
