Mourani quits Bloc after caucus expulsion
MONTREAL - The Bloc Quebecois MP who has been expelled from caucus is quitting the party and says she is questioning her involvement in the sovereignty movement.
Maria Mourani held a news conference in her Montreal riding this morning, a day after her expulsion from caucus because of her stinging criticism of Quebec's proposed charter of values.
Mourani says she will remain as an Independent MP in Ahuntsic.
The Parti Quebecois government plan would forbid Quebec's public employees from wearing more visible religious symbols — including hijabs, turbans, yarmulkes and larger-than-average crucifixes.
The 44-year-old Mourani says she is is extremely saddened by the turn of events.
Bloc Leader Daniel Paille turfed Mourani from caucus after she warned the values charter would create systemic discrimination, especially against women, and that it would hurt the drive for Quebec independence.
