MONTREAL - A Quebec association of victims of priests is throwing its support behind Cardinal Marc Ouellet — but not necessarily because it feels he's the best candidate to become pope.
Carlo Tarini, a spokesman for the group, says a Ouellet papacy would thrust a number of sexual abuse cases involving Quebec priests into the spotlight.
He says that could lead to progress on cases that have been stalled for years.
The group is planning a rally today in Montreal.
The Quebec-born Ouellet is being touted as one of the contenders to succeed Pope Benedict, who announced his resignation last month.
Ouellet has come under fire in the past from critics who say he didn't do enough to address the issue of sexual abuse by priests in his home province.
