Oil and gas regulations coming soon: Kent

OTTAWA - The federal environment minister says he hopes to present new regulations for Canada's oil and gas sector by the middle of this year.

The new regulations would seek to curb the sector's greenhouse gas emissions to help Canada meet a 2020 target for a 17 per cent cut in overall emissions.

Rules are already in place for the transportation and coal-fired electricity industries, but they only get Canada halfway to that goal.

Kent tells a House of Commons committee his objective is for the regulations on the oil and gas industries to help close the gap.

He says the regulations, in the works since 2011, have been delayed by a desire to craft a plan that won't require substantial changes after public consultation.

Kent says that process is now in its final stages.
