Chinese investment to shift: ambassador

EDMONTON - Canada's ambassador to China says he expects investment from that country to keep pouring into Canadian resource investments.

But Guy (GEE) Saint-Jacques says he thinks those dollars will increasingly flow into mining and forestry instead of energy development.

Saint-Jacques, who was speaking at the University of Alberta, said Chinese investors are becoming increasingly sophisticated about Canada's approval process.

He said they have already begun talking with aboriginal groups, many of whom have concerns about the environmental impacts of development.

The ambassador says political reform in China is proceeding slowly, but will continue.

He is encouraging more Canadian students to study in the Asian country as a way of building ties and understanding.
