Strip citizenship from terrorists: Kenney
OTTAWA - Immigration Minister Jason Kenney says the government should consider changing the law so that Canadians with dual citizenship who commit terrorist acts abroad can be stripped of their Canadian status.
Kenney says other western countries have the power to revoke citizenship in cases of terrorism.
His comments follow revelations Tuesday that a Canadian with dual citizenship is suspected of being involved in a deadly bombing that killed six people aboard a bus in Bulgaria last year.
Conservative backbencher Devinder Shory has proposed a private member's bill to revoke the citizenship of dual-status Canadians who go abroad to commit acts of war against Canada.
Kenney says that bill could be expanded to include terrorist acts in general.
He says people involved in terrorism have clearly renounced any sense of loyalty to Canada and should be treated accordingly.
