Riot suspect says he doesn't recall events

VANCOUVER - The first trial involving the Stanley Cup riot in Vancouver has heard a 26-year-old man doesn't remember smashing windows during the melee.

B.C. provincial court has heard Spencer Kirkwood was caught on security video using a street barricade to break the glass of a downtown office building.

Kirkwood has pleaded not guilty and says that although he drank alcohol at a friend's house while watching the game on June 15, 2011, he awoke the next morning with no recollection of joining mayhem downtown.

Court also heard Kirkwood called 911 in the days following the riot to report a threatening phone call from someone who identified him in video of the riot posted online.

Kirkwood is charged with participating in a riot, mischief and breach of bail for allegedly consuming alcohol after his release.

The Crown has approved charges against 173 people in connection with the riot after the Vancouver Canucks lost the playoff final against the Boston Bruins.
