Burgers recalled over E. coli concern

OTTAWA - The Canadian Food Inspection Agency and Loblaw Companies Ltd. are warning the public to avoid certain Butcher's Choice Garlic Peppercorn Beef Burgers because of possible E. coli contamination.

The affected product is sold frozen in 1.13 kilogram packages with a best-before date of March 3.

This CFIA says the recall is the result of an ongoing investigation into a number of E. coli related illnesses in Canada.

The federal agency says it is currently testing additional products from across the country and the recall may be expanded to include other products as test results are received.

Loblaw Companies Ltd. of Brampton, Ont. is voluntarily recalling the affected product and the CFIA is monitoring the effectiveness of the recall.

E. coli O157:H7 is potentially deadly. Health officials say it can cause bloody diarrhea, dehydration and, in the most severe cases, kidney failure.
