Tonight at the Sault Ste. Marie Court House, a coroner's jury made 40 recommendations to prevent canoeing accidents like the one that killed Megan Mitchell and Erica Auclair Mitchell this time last year.

We are currently posting the full text of all 40 recommendations.

The recommendations provide a comprehensive list of suggestions to entities such as the Girl Guides, the OPP, City Police, Camp McDougall, and Environment Canada, to prevent future water-related hypothermia deaths.

The OPP, for example, has been asked to issue global positioning system devices, night vision goggles and image stabilization binoculars and night-vision binoculars for all of its marine craft, and to double the supervising uniformed officers at its North Bay Communications Centre, from one officer to two officers.

The Girl Guides, among other things, have been asked to prepare written plans for all canoe outings, complete with schedule, route and a mandatory meeting with parents and guardians.

The jury also wants all such plans to be approved by a qualified person appointed by the provincial leadership of the Girl Guides of Canada.
