The official launch of the new Sault Ste. Marie Sports Council will take place next month.

Chaired by world-class multi-sport athlete Sherri Smith, the new umbrella orgaization will meet at 7 p.m. on April 1 at John Rhodes Community Centre.

"Sports Councils are groups of sport and recreation leaders and others interested in the development of sport and recreation, who meet to work and build sport in a community." The role of a sports council differs from community to community, but they tend to function as an information clearinghouse and a co-ordinating body among local sports clubs and organizations.

Other communities that have established similar groups include Sudbury, Thunder Bay, Hamilton, Kitchener-Waterloo, London, Mississauga and Oakville.

Members of the new Sault Sports Council include:

- Michael Kunsti - Sharon Buehner - John King - Ed Belanger - Gino Cavallo - Maria Romano - Deane Greenwood - Patti Morris - Helen Stewart - Sherri Smith (chair) - Margaret Hazelton (staff)

The City's Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee gave approval in prinicple to the new group last night.
