A Southern Ontario man is dead following a snowmobile accident Tuesday on St. Joseph Island.

Ontario Provincial Police East Algoma Detachment advise that Vincenzo Spano, 52, of Leamington was pronounced dead at Matthews Memorial Hospital after a collision on the Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs D107 Trail between the D-Line and the F & G Line.

The accident was reported to police around 1 p.m.

"The driver was travelling southbound on the groomed trail when he lost control and was thrown airborne into a tree," police said in a written statement.

"The OFSC trail at the location of the collision was closed for approximately five hours but has since been reopened.

"A member of the OPP Technical Traffic Collision Investigative Team attended the scene."

The accident remains under investigation, police said.

During the 2003 season, 32 snowmobile-related fatalities occurred in Ontario, seven of them on OFSC trails.

In the 2002 season, there were 45 snowmobile-related deaths, 15 of them on OFSC trails.
