A light rain didn’t hold anyone back as the OLG officially announced on Wednesday afternoon the adoption of Clergue Park.

Although it’s something the OLG has been a part of for two years already in a different sense with their involvement in the Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup, OLG Casino Sault Ste. Marie General Manager Valerie Braun called the adoption of Clergue Park a ‘natural choice.’

The OLG’s Bet on Green volunteers have committed to cleaning up Clergue Park in the spring and in the fall.

Sault Ste. Marie Councillor Steve Butland, who attended in place of Mayor Debbie Amaroso, called the adoption an inspiration.

He told the group in attendance that he hopes it would lead to other businesses around Sault Ste. Marie also getting involved in similar actions down the road.

Following is the full release from the OLG:

SAULT STE. MARIE - Even as the fall colours are fading, Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (OLG) employee volunteers in Sault Ste. Marie are still seeing green.

OLG’s Bet on Green team members from OLG Casino Sault Ste. Marie and corporate office on Foster Drive are proud to have adopted Clergue Park as part of the continuing efforts to promote environmental awareness and community partnership.

"Clergue Park has been the location where our Bet on Green team members have been participating in the Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup for the last two years,” said Valerie Braun, general manager of OLG Casino Sault Ste. Marie.

“This is the first time that OLG has adopted a park and Clergue Park was a natural choice.”

Adopting Clergue Park means OLG’s Bet on Green team has committed to cleaning up the area twice a year, once in the spring and once in the fall.

Representing the City of Sault Ste. Marie, Ward One Councilor Steve Butland applauded the initiative, saying: “I’m very pleased that OLG and its staff have adopted this important downtown, waterfront green space, and commend them for all their environmental efforts. Hopefully this will help inspire employers from all sectors, and residents to make their own contributions to the local environment. With everyone making an effort, whether big or small, we will have a very clean and tidy city that we are all proud of.”

The efforts of Bet on Green teams at OLG Casino Sault Ste. Marie and the Foster Drive corporate office are self-directed employee initiatives, with corporate support.

The green efforts in Sault Ste Marie and all of the OLG gaming sites across the province, are led by volunteer staff members and range from recycling campaigns to community events.

A primary pillar of OLG’s Bet On Green program is to enable and engage OLG employees to be greener at work and in their community.

Eco-friendly efforts initiated by the Bet on Green team in place at OLG Casino Sault Ste. Marie include:

- A switch from bottled water to filtered tap water on both the casino gaming floor and in employee areas which will lead to the prevention of 60,000 bottles per year from going to landfill.

- A 69 percent reduction in lighting energy consumption on the gaming floor.

- A switch to green cleaning products and 100 percent recycled paper products.

For these and other green initiatives, OLG Casino Sault Ste. Marie was presented with the Sault Ste. Marie Chamber of Commerce Environment Award at a ceremony on October 19, 2011.

Sponsored by the Sault Ste Marie Economic Development Corporation, the Environment Award honours a local business that has made a difference in making the environment better, whether it is through reduction of pollution or waste, energy efficiency, new environmental or energy technology applications or best practices.

OLG is a provincial agency responsible for province-wide lottery games and gaming facilities.

Since 1975, OLG lotteries, casinos, slots, and resort casinos have generated more than $34 billion for the benefit of the Province of Ontario.

Gaming proceeds support Ontario's hospitals, amateur sport, recreational and cultural activities, communities, provincial priority programs such as health care and education, and local and provincial charities and non-profit organizations through the Ontario Trillium Foundation.
