NEWS RELEASE

MINISTRY OF NATURAL RESOURCES

****************************** There were two new fires reported in the Northeast Region on June 8.

North Bay 15, reported south of Obabika River Provincial Park, was called out at 0.1 hectares.

Wawa 10, reported west of Manitouwadge, was also called out at 0.1 hectares.

Only one active fire is burning within the region.

Sudbury 20, reported 60 kilometres due north of Spanish, is being held at 3.3 hectares.

There are no issues anticipated with this lightning-caused fire.

The fire hazard for Friday is expected to be moderate in the far north, moderate from Chapleau to Gogama south and low elsewhere.

Have a look at the forest fire danger map to see the current fire danger.

Ontario now has over 350 fire staff in Alberta, the largest number of personnel at one time since support to that province began May 17 and the largest contribution of all supporting agencies.

So far there’s been approximately 5300 person days of support provided to Alberta, just over half the total support provided to British Columbia for the entire fire season last year.

An Ontario incident management team will take over management of Alberta’s largest wildfire in 60 years (approximately 4430 square kilometres) by the end of the week.

Ontario is also assisting the Northwest Territories by providing an air attack officer.

When cleaning up wood and grass debris, the ministry suggests composting, chipping or taking debris to a landfill site instead of burning.

If you still decide to burn debris, residents are reminded that they are required to follow safe outdoor fire guidelines.

In particular, there are restrictions on day burning of brush and grass.

Fires are to be started no sooner than two hours before sunset, be extinguished no later than two hours after sunrise, attended at all times and put dead out before leaving.

If you live within a municipality, contact your local municipal office or fire department before burning.
