NEWS RELEASE

CHRISTIAN PROVENZANO LIBERAL CANDIDATE SAULT STE. MARIE & AREA

******************************** Provenzano: Future of health care No. 1 priority

SAULT STE. MARIE - While families are struggling to contain rising expenditures and varied availability in health care, the pressure on Canadian families is growing.

Local candidate, Christian Provenzano, has heard concerns from local families and said today that improved health care is crucial to all citizens.

“There is absolutely no question that I have received more comments, questions and expressions of concern regarding health care. More than any other single issue,” said Provenzano. “It is pretty simple: people are concerned about those that they love. They want them to be healthy and they want them to have opportunity. Government should respond to those basic priorities, and that’s what a Liberal government will do.”

A liberal government commits to reversing five years of neglect in heath care reform by providing direct support to Canadian families, provinces and territories to secure equal, quality care.

- The Family Care Plan includes a $1,350 Family Care Tax Benefit to help low- and middle-income families with the cost of caregiving, and the Family Care EI benefit to let you take time off work to care for a loved one at home.

- Canadian Brain Health Strategy will help families cope with the crushing pressures of dementia, a Liberal government will commit $100 million over its first two years for research into treatments and cures for Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia, including funding for awareness, prevention, and income security issues.

- Health promotion and Canada’s first National Food Policy: To show federal leadership in improving the health of Canadian families, Liberals will focus on promoting exercise, healthy eating, nutrition, better food labeling, regulating salt and transfats, local farmers’ markets, Canadian food on Canadian plates, and improving the food inspection system.

- Improved rural health services: While some 20 percent of Canadians live in rural areas, only 10 percent of doctors practice there. A Liberal government will invest an additional $40 million over two years to improve rural health services in cooperation with provinces, territories, municipalities and medical professionals.
