************************* Youth employment a priority - Provenzano

SAULT STE. MARIE, ON - Tackling youth unemployment is a priority for Sault Ste. Marie and area Liberal candidate Christian Provenzano who said today that the Liberal Party will introduce a new Youth Hiring Incentive for small and medium-sized businesses. At 14 percent, the youth unemployment rate is nearly twice the national average, and the worst in a generation. “Whether I am speaking to students in our high schools, or parents, opportunity for our youth is always front and centre,” Provenzano said. “More needs to be done to encourage young people to stay in our community, but they won’t stay if there are no jobs and opportunities.”

Provenzano continued: “The Youth Hiring Incentive is a good fit for our community because it encourages small and medium-sized businesses to hire and keep young people employed in our community. It certainly isn't an entire solution but it is a good start.”

A Liberal government will put in place a Youth Hiring Incentive for small and medium-sized businesses - a 100 percent Employment Insurance holiday for every Canadian youth age 18 to 25 that they hire.

This incentive will apply to all new youth hires by small and medium enterprises for three years, and be evaluated in the third year to verify results and administrative efficiency.

The Youth Hiring Incentive will be particularly valuable given that existing payroll taxes pose a significant burden for smaller firms.

It is expected to benefit up to 170,000 young Canadians each year, at an annual investment of $130 - $160 million. The new Youth Hiring Incentive will benefit 170,000 young Canadians annually.
