Whereas the Internet has created great opportunity for all people of Canada and has had the effect of shortening distances between communities situated throughout our vast land; and

Whereas Sault Ste. Marie has a number of innovative and creative businesses that use the Internet as a tool for their successful enterprises; and

Whereas the Internet is also used for many other applications in Canadian communities including but not limited to health care and education:

Now therefore be it resolved that Sault Ste. Marie City Council encourage its citizens to log on to The Stop The Meter Campaign (www.stopthemeter.ca) and sign the petition which calls on Canadian decision-makers to stop big telecom companies from forcing usage-based Internet billing on Canadians and to stand up for consumer choice and competition in the Internet service market; and

Further that this resolution be sent to the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM), the Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO) and our local MP and MPP.
