DCCC withdraws ad criticized by non-partisan watchdog

IRON MOUNTAIN, MI - The Democratic Congressional campaign has “pulled” a television ad that misstated Dr. Dan Benishek’s position on taxes, according to a Washington-based Capitol Hill publication.

In an article published yesterday, The Hill reported: “The DCCC recently pulled a FairTax ad in Michigan’s 1st District because it didn’t provide the full story on the tax. DCCC spokesman Ryan Rudominer said they would not include details of the tax in future ads.”

The Hill article added that the non-partisan, public interest watchdog group FactCheck.org recently slammed the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC)” for omitting basic facts about the FairTax proposal.

FactCheck.org director Brooks Jackson told The Hill: “Democrats are accusing Republicans of supporting a 23 percent sales tax on everything, which would be on top of all existing taxes... it’s misrepresenting by omission of the FairTax idea. When people try to sell it on false evidence we step in.”

Campaign Press Secretary Trent Benishek noted: “Two weeks ago (September 20) our campaign’s attorney requested that area television stations remove an ad produced by the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) on behalf of Gary McDowell from the airwaves, calling it ‘deliberately misleading’. This is a great vindication of our position and proof positive of the deliberately misleading nature of the McDowell team’s efforts.”

At the time, Benishek campaign attorney Charlie Spies pointed out, “The DCCC tried to make the exact same spurious accusation against House candidate Tim Burns in Pittsburgh last May, its ad was swiftly pulled off the air by a prominent Pittsburgh station.”

“Unfortunately, Democrats can’t run on their agenda of spending and ‘ObamaCare,’ nor can Gary McDowell speak about his Lansing record of voting to raise taxes. Their only recourse is a game of misdirection - which is typical of a career politician. Dr. Benishek is confident that voters will not be fooled by Gary McDowell’s malicious attacks,” Trent Benishek added.

Dr. Dan Benishek is a surgeon from Iron River, Michigan and the Republican nominee for Congress in Michigan’s 1st Congressional District.

Says he is honored to receive endorsement of primary election opponent

PETOSKEY, MI - Dr. Dan Benishek, the Republican nominee for Congress in Michigan’s 1st District, today received the endorsement of Mr. Tom Stillings, a candidate for Congress in the Republican primary held in August.

“This year, more than any that I can remember in my lifetime, the choice that we make in deciding whom we shall send to represent us in Congress is crucial,” Mr. Stillings stated. “Our only rational choice is a person of conservative values. We need someone who will have a team behind him and around him to back up his proposals, as he works with them to downsize and limit the federal government.”

“For the sake of the nation and for the sake of our children, I urge all to vote to send Dr. Dan to Congress,” Mr. Stillings concluded.

“I am honored to receive the endorsement of Tom Stillings,” Dr. Benishek commented. “We had a hard-fought primary, but I welcome his help as we work to bring real change to Washington. I share his desire to cut taxes and spending to bring jobs back to Northern Michigan.”
