With this week's record-breaking temperatures in the Sault, more than a few people wanted to go swimming.

Those who showed up at the Peter G. Manzo pool were disappointed.

It closed for the season on Friday, August 27.

"The outdoor pools are normally closed the last Friday in August," says Nick Apostle, City commissioner of community services.

They are mostly staffed by summer university students, many of whom have headed back to school.

With high temperatures expected and school not starting until next week, the City wanted to keep the pools open an extra week.

It had to make a choice between the Peter G. Manzo pool on Young Street and the V. E. Greco pool on Albert Street, because there simply wasn't enough staff to keep them both open, says Apostle.

"We chose the Greco pool because it's heated," he tells SooToday.com. "If the weather does get a bit cooler before the end of the week, people can still use it and be comfortable."

Cathy Marinelli, the City's aquatic supervisor, says that data gathered on the Manzo pool showed it was getting as cold as 16.7 degrees overnight in recent weeks.

"People were just standing around and not getting in the pool," said Apostle. "So that was also a factor in our decision to keep the Greco pool open instead."

Next week, Saultites will lose another popular swimming spot when the Pointe des Chenes day-park and picnic area closes for the season on September 8.
