A protest closure of Highway 6 to Manitoulin Island planned for Friday has been cancelled.

Organizers say the HST protest was called off after Whitefish First Nation Chief Franklin Paibomsai (Shining Turtle) received a call at 4:30 p.m. today from federal Finance Minister James Flaherty.

Flaherty has reportedly agreed to arrange a meeting between the provincial and federal governments and Ontario First Nations.

Chief Shining Turtle has cancelled the highway closure but day-long protest activities at the Whitefish First Nation Community Centre will continue tomorrow as planned. Despite widespread rumours that a rail blockade will be erected Friday in Garden River, SooToday.com has received no confirmation of any local protest other than the rail blockade previously announced by Batchewana First Nation for June 21.

We will be standing by tomorrow and through the long weekend to post news of any transportation disruptions, should they occur.

Readers are encouraged to contact our newsroom should they witness any highway or rail blockades.
