A senior RCMP officer who drafted a fake memo to cover up wiretap deficiencies is now facing criminal investigation after the Crown was forced to drop a major Sault Ste. Marie cocaine prosecution with alleged links to the Hell's Angels, the National Post is reporting this morning.

The existence of the bogus memo came to light in an unrelated Toronto case last month, when an RCMP sergeant admitted he wrote it under the name of another officer.

The faked document is now raising concerns about police wiretaps in 30 other criminal prosecutions, the newspaper reports.

On October 3, 2008, Richard Hurley and Michael Jarvie of Sault Ste. Marie and Michael Evaristo of Shanty Bay, Ontario were charged as part of Project Omax, a 17-month investigation into local cocaine trafficking.

Those proceedings were stayed last month.
