************************* Update - suspicious child death investigation

Police make arrest in homicide of 3-year-old

SAULT STE. MARIE, ON - The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service (SSMPS) in conjunction with the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Criminal Investigation Branch (CIB) have made an arrest in the investigation into the death of 3-year-old Aiden Floyd-Lapinskas. On November 12, 2009, at approximately 1:40 p.m., Aiden Floyd-Lapinskas was transported to hospital after Ambulance Services responded to a report of a child in distress in an apartment on Old Garden River Road in Sault Ste. Marie.

On November 16, 2009, the child died as a result of his injuries.

On November 27, 2009, at the request of the SSMPS, the OPP CIB assumed the lead of this investigation.

On December 22, 2009, as a result of the information gathered during the ongoing investigation, police upgraded the case to a murder investigation.

This morning, the SSMPS arrested James Purcell, aged 30 of Sault Ste. Marie, with one count of second degree murder.

Purcell is being held in custody and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Criminal Court of Justice in Sault Ste. Marie on January 13, 2010.

The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service and the OPP would like to thank the citizens of who came forward with information to assist with this case.

The investigation is ongoing and under the direction of Detective Inspector Guy Faucher of the OPP CIB.
