10:30 p.m. update on Essar Steel flares (5 new photos)

Essar Steel Algoma spokesperson Brenda Stenta advises SooToday.com that the odd flames noticed by many readers tonight from the steel mill are coke oven flares caused by a power failure.

"We expect to resolve the matter overnight," Stenta says. "At this point we have not determined the source of the power failure but believe it likely originated external to Essar Steel Algoma."

Faithful reader Theodore Dilworth, a junior mechanical engineering student at Lake Superior State University, captured some dramatic long-exposure photographs of the flares from the point of view of the LSSU campus.
