Liberal and NDP MPs have broken party ranks to endorse a Conservative bill that could scrap Canada's long-gun registry program.

The vote this evening was 164 in support and 137 against bill C-391 on its second reading.

Of the 164 in favour of the private member's bill, 12 were NDP MPs, eight were Liberals and most were from rural ridings.

The bill now goes to a Commons committee for review and possible amendment before returning to the House for its third reading and possible passage to the Senate.
